In very specific ways, I believe in the Laws of Attraction. I believe that if you build it, they will come, quite literally. I’m a fiction writer. I have made real on the page what is floating around in my head. It’s an easy faith to keep. I’ve always imagined creating a creative life in a creative place with a creative mate and surrounding myself with creative people who imagine in this same creative way—and so I do.
Last spring, the finish of the semester, grades turned in, and commencement over with, I drove home looking forward to summer break. I was supposed to have taught a class, but it didn’t make, and, admittedly, guiltily, there was part of me that was relieved. I fantasized about sleeping in, grilling out, our upcoming vacation, remodeling the bathroom, and seeing friends I had been missing.
That very next day, I was standing at the end of our porch, the end that, years before we had screened-in, but, now, through neglect and dogs, the screening had become shabby, torn, falling apart, full of bugs and dust. We hadn’t sat on the rockers out there for years. I had recently visited some friends who had a similar, yet larger, veranda porch, and had put a big brass bed at one end, screening and walling it in with windows. It seemed cozy and dreamy, and I longed to curl up in that bed. Before Elenna knew what hit her, we were in line at Habitat buying old window sashes, doors with glass panes, screens. We tore down the old, built and screened-in the new, electrified, painted it blue and white with a somewhat nautical theme, since Elenna’s from the coast. Finally, we furnished with an old bed, table, chairs, and have each had amazing afternoon naps, daydreams, and even enjoyed a few summer evenings sleeping closer to the stars.
In the most serendipitous ways, as most creative wonders come to be, the creation of this space somehow provided the place where we began our collaborations, new considerations, rethinking opportunities about our art: my books, Elenna’s photography. And so began our new adventure with Napping Porch Press.
Mistress of my OWN Universe!
Taking a deep breath and a big leap, I have decided to become both author and publisher of my novels, an empowering and sometimes terrifying decision that when in doubt, the Universe has always assuaged with encouragement to keep moving. I contacted a number of self-publishing authors, read of others’ experience, and what I began discovering was a pattern of excitement and success; Each in turn encouraged me to go it, alone, but lucky for me I have Elenna, so I don’t have to go it alone, and instead, here WE go together!
At Napping Porch Press: Books, we currently have available limited edition signed copies of The Cat Rising Series: Cat Rising, Girls with Hammers, and Babies, Bikes, and Broads. We will soon feature copies of the upcoming Angels and Manners, all also available, unsigned at Bywater Books and on Amazon etc.
Our goal is to publish all of my novels on Ereaders including the Cat Rising Series: Cat Rising, Girls with Hammers, and Babies, Bikes, and Broads, and the soon to be released Angels and Manners.
